Ukraine and Croatia discussed cooperation in the energy sector, strengthening Europe's energy security, and, in particular, the use of Ukrainian gas storage facilities. This became known following the meeting of the Prime Ministers of the two countries, Denys Shmyhal and Andrej Plenković.
According to Shmyhal, Ukraine expects that Croatian energy companies will also join the reconstruction of Ukraine. At the meeting, the parties discussed the practical possibilities of this issue.
"This concerns the use of Ukrainian gas storage facilities, which are the largest on the continent - 31 billion cubic meters. This can become a strong gas safe for Europe, where Croatia can store its own gas resources. I am sure that this area of cooperation has significant prospects," the head of the Ukrainian government noted.
Gas in Europe – what is known
On January 1, 2025, Ukraine stopped transporting Russian gas through its own gas transportation system. The decision was made in the interests of national security and international partners were informed of this in accordance with the established procedure.
In early January, it became known that gas reserves in Europe are being depleted faster than at any time in the last seven years.
On January 27, it was reported that the European Commission would continue negotiations with Ukraine on the supply of natural gas to Europe and would involve Hungary and Slovakia in these discussions.
