Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's main goal in any future negotiations to end the war is to reach agreements that make it impossible for Ukraine to join NATO.

The Financial Times writes about this, citing a senior Kremlin official and another person who discussed the issue with Putin.

The US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organization must also abandon some operations on its eastern borders.

"He wants to change the rules of the international order so that there are no threats to Russia. He is very concerned about what the world will look like after the war. In any case, Trump wants to roll back NATO. The world is changing, anything can happen," said the interlocutor of the publication.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin said on Friday that Putin is open to meeting with President-elect Donald Trump after he is sworn in on January 20. However, the Russian dictator expressed a tough position regarding possible peace talks in Ukraine. He also doubled down on Russia's claims to the occupied eastern Ukrainian territories and stated that Moscow does not want a long-term cease-fire agreement, but "a durable peace with guarantees for the Russian Federation and its citizens."

The newspaper recalled that in June of last year, Putin said that Russia was ready to end the war if Ukraine renounced its ambitions for NATO membership and withdrew from four regions that Russia had partially occupied and enshrined in its Constitution as "new" territories. Ukraine rejected these demands for months, calling them tantamount to capitulation.

At the same time, Trump's advisers talked about plans to end the war, which would actually hand over large parts of Russia. In addition, the new president's special representative for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, has proposed a peace plan that calls for a quick cease-fire and a negotiated settlement that involves effectively freezing the battlefield along the battle lines.

In addition, Kellogg proposed tying US aid to Kyiv's participation in peace talks, while threatening to give Ukraine "everything it needs to win on the battlefield" if Moscow refuses to negotiate. In addition to this plan, it is assumed that Russia may open negotiations if the United States postpones Ukraine's NATO membership for a long period.
