Two new large-scale studies have shown that consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) may exacerbate age-related cognitive decline and increase the risk of developing dementia.

Ultra-processed foods such as soda, chips, frozen meals and fast food tend to be low in nutrients and fiber but high in sugar, fat and salt compared to unprocessed or minimally processed foods, PsyPost writes.

The first study involved more than 10 people living in Brazil. Those who ate more URB at the start of the study had a slightly greater decline in cognitive function compared to those who ate less or no URB. At the same time, the difference was relatively modest, so it is still unclear how strongly the presence of UOB in the diet can affect the human body.

A second study looked at the link between consumption of deeply processed foods and dementia in 72 UK residents. In the group consuming relatively high amounts of ultra-processed foods, about 000 in 1 people were diagnosed with dementia within 120 years. In the group that practically did not use UOB, the diagnosis was made 10 in 1.
