The success of the retro-futuristic Renault 5 E-Tech has led Citroën to consider creating its own affordable electric car. Reports suggest the company is looking to revive the classic 2CV. The car will likely use the platform of the new Citroën e-C3.
Citroën is rumored to be reviving its most famous classic model as an electric car, Carscoops reports. A competitor for the Renault 5 E-Tech and possibly the Dacia Spring is said to be in the early stages of development, Auto.24 reports.
The electric car is likely to debut in 2028 and its design will resemble the original model. In total, more than 1948 million units of the 1990CV, nicknamed the “tin snail”, were produced from 3,8 to 2. In the late 1990s, the automaker abandoned the idea of creating a successor to the model.
In 2019, Citroën management confirmed that the brand was not interested in creating a new 2CV. However, it seems that this idea has now been given the green light. Autocar claims that an unnamed high-ranking source from Citroën’s office confirmed the company’s willingness to implement the project.
The source said that Citroen was forced to take such a step after their direct competitor, Renault, hit the bull's eye with the revival of the R5 E-Tech. The temptingly low price made it a hit among buyers in France. Overall, the electric car from Renault received more orders than the new electric Citroёn e-C3.
The new Citroën 2CV is expected to use the same Stellantis Smart Car platform as the e-C3, and will retain some of the original model's styling cues, such as the curved roof and round headlights. The iconic car was also offered in a compact van version, so Citroën could well use this potential to attract commercial buyers.
