Tankers pile up near Russia's largest port in the Far East due to sanctions - Bloomberg

Tankers have been piling up near a key Russian port in the Far East where crude oil is shipped after the United States imposed sanctions.

This is reported by Bloomberg, Ukrinform reports.

It is noted that nine tankers are currently near the port of Kozmino, which is more than usual. Another 11 vessels are either approaching the port or have recently left it.

As the publication notes, the concentration of tankers near Kozmino demonstrates how the large-scale US sanctions introduced on January 10 have disrupted Russian oil exports.

"US sanctions have previously hit tankers carrying Russian oil hard. Traders and shipping company representatives believe that if this happens in the case of the Kozmino, then Moscow will have a hard time finding a sufficient number of vessels," the article says.

According to Bloomberg, 10 tankers transported ESPO oil from December to January 27. So far, the only tanker that has loaded it since the US sanctions were imposed is the Li Bai. According to monitoring data, it remains anchored near Kozmino after loading.

The sanctioned vessel Bay Baikal loaded oil produced within the Sakhalin-11 project on January 2. And on Sunday, it completed unloading in the Chinese port of Lianyungang — presumably, the publication notes, in violation of sanctions.

Traders and shippers said any shortage of vessels could slow loading and exports from Kozmino and ultimately lead to a reduction in Far Eastern oil exports.

At the same time, as noted, some companies may send their ships to Kozmino to help solve logistical problems. For example, last week, the tanker Bhilva turned around in the Indian Ocean and arrived in the Strait of Malacca, indicating Kozmino as its destination. At the same time, the tanker Sai Baba, which is not under sanctions and has previously transported oil from western Russian ports, entered this port for the first time. So far, it has not transported ESPO oil, but only Urals, which is loaded in Primorsk, Ust-Luz and Murmansk.
