As Ukrinform reports, this was stated by White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre.
According to her, on January 14, the administration informed Congress that Biden had decided: "Cuba should no longer be designated as a state sponsor of terrorism."
In addition, congressmen were informed that the president had suspended the "Liberdad" law, which imposes a number of restrictions on trade with Cuba, for six months.
Biden also repealed the 2017 presidential memorandum on US policy toward Cuba, which established the so-called "restrictive list" and rules for the interaction of American individuals and entities with Cuban ones.
In turn, the White House indicated, the Catholic Church informed Washington that the Cuban government would soon release a "significant number" of political prisoners.
It is noted that in making these decisions, the US president listened to the advice given to him by many world leaders, especially from Latin America, in support of the Cuban people.
"We are taking these steps as a sign of gratitude for the efforts of the Catholic Church to help Cuba take constructive measures to restore the freedom of its citizens and create conditions that will improve the lives of Cubans," the statement said.
The current administration's policy towards Cuba is aimed at reuniting families, strengthening cultural and educational ties between the countries, ensuring the free flow of remittances, and increasing support for independent Cuban entrepreneurs, a White House spokeswoman said.
Recall that the Helms-Burton Act, or "Liberdad," passed during the presidency of Bill Clinton in 1996, established international sanctions against the Cuban government. According to it, restrictions are imposed on any non-American company that has economic relations with Havana.
