US President Joe Biden, at the end of his term, commuted the sentences of nearly 2500 people convicted of non-violent drug offenses, Reuters reported on Friday, January 17.
In a statement, Biden said they are "serving disproportionately long terms compared to the terms they would receive today under current law."
According to the Biden administration, some citizens were pardoned due to outdated laws that established different penalties for different types of cocaine, as well as harsher sentences for drug crimes in general.
Biden also noted that he has issued more individual pardons and commutations than any predecessor.
