US President Joe Biden may, as a precautionary measure, pardon individuals who risk falling out of favor with US President-elect Donald Trump, The Washington Post reports, citing sources.
The publication says that while many White House staffers are packing up ahead of Trump's inauguration on January 20, the administration expects Biden to sign several more executive orders. In particular, the Democrat expects to take measures to combat gender discrimination.
In addition, “Biden is considering the possibility of preemptively pardoning individuals who may fall out of favor with the Trump administration,” the newspaper notes. According to The Washington Post, Biden’s activity at the end of his presidential term “indicates his belief that Trump poses a threat to American traditions.”
It notes that after his inauguration, Trump will not be able to revoke the amnesty that Biden granted to a number of prisoners. And he will likely face legal problems if he tries to revoke temporary protections granted to immigrants from El Salvador, Venezuela and elsewhere.
