The year 2024 was a defining year in the context of climate change, as the average global temperature reached a historic high of 15,10 °C, exceeding the pre-industrial level by 1,6 °C, which for the first time exceeded the critical limit of 1,5 °C. This achievement, according to many climatologists, could become a point of no return in global warming.

The European Climate Change Service Copernicus also recorded a record concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, accompanied by a record sea surface temperature of 17,16 °C on July 22. Scientists note that the temperature increase that has been ongoing since 1967 has reached a peak, with the average in 2024 being 0,72 °C higher than the average for the period 1991–2020. “These data confirm the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Anna Ivanova, a representative of Copernicus.

Rising temperatures have led to a sharp increase in extreme weather events, with over 2024 major wildfires, droughts and devastating hurricanes occurring around the world in 300. This is already having a serious impact on ecosystems, causing habitat degradation and threatening the livelihoods of many human communities.

Experts' warnings about the importance of keeping global warming below 1,5°C have not been met due to insufficient efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Climate projections remain pessimistic, predicting further rapid temperature increases over the next century. This situation highlights the need for urgent international action to combat climate change.
