The habit of eating porridge for breakfast can be harmful to health

According to nutritionists, it is better to eat protein, not carbohydrates, for breakfast.

Some eating habits have been preserved as a reminder of the traditions of the past, but they are more harmful than useful for health. One of these habits is eating cereal for breakfast, nutritionists Oksana Vydrya and Hanna Lis told about it.

Experts noted that people often prefer to eat porridge for breakfast, cooked from quite seriously processed cereals, or generally use flakes, as is the case with oatmeal. As a result, little fiber and useful trace elements remain in such porridges - at the same time, they contain a lot of carbohydrates, sugar and oil can also be added.

The habit of eating such cereals for breakfast (as well as other carbohydrate-rich dishes and products) can be harmful to health, nutritionists stated.

"Fast carbohydrates for breakfast cause a 'hormonal swing.' A lot of glucose enters the blood, and in response, a lot of insulin is produced. After that, the blood sugar level drops, and in an hour you want to eat again. That's why porridge (especially with honey), muesli, flakes are not the best option for breakfast," nutritionist Hanna Lis emphasized.

Doctor Oksana Vydrya clarified that if you still choose porridge for breakfast, you should give preference to whole grain. Ideally, it should not be boiled, but steamed from the evening before. At the same time, even whole grain porridge, which is useful in many ways, is not suitable for consumption by many people, the doctor reminded.

"If there is a violation of carbohydrate metabolism (overweight, diabetes) and diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, then porridge for breakfast is not the best option."

Nutritionists advised to eat foods rich in protein, useful fatty acids, vitamins and trace elements for breakfast. They named the appropriate options: cheese plus low-fat sour cream, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, hard-boiled eggs or poultry with greens, vegetables, avocado. Avocado can also be combined with various foods.

Also, doctors consider it a bad habit to eat everything with bread. They recommended to minimize the amount of this product in the diet - its quality today requires better. It is advisable not to eat white bread at all.
