The mission of the Leopard 1A5 upgrade is to improve tank survivability in the face of modern threats, including grenade launchers, drones and anti-tank guided missiles. The installation of the dynamic protection system eliminated the weakness of the main 70-mm armor. Complex "Kontakt-1" reduces the penetration capacity of cumulative ammunition by 92%. In addition, the tanks were equipped with mesh anti-drone nets.
However, "Kontakt-1" dynamic protection has limitations. After the blocks are triggered, areas of the armor become vulnerable to repeated hits, and the lower part of the tower remains practically unprotected. In addition, the system is ineffective against tandem charges and kinetic projectiles.
