People who are at risk of myocardial infarction in the near future have a special genetic marker in their blood.

Scientists from the Italian University and the Tor Vergata Polyclinic came to this conclusion. Their pilot study made it possible to identify people at high risk of a heart attack at an early stage and take urgent measures to save them.

The doctors said that their main goal was to understand why almost all acute coronary syndromes have an underlying coronary artery disease, and its cause is a combination of lifestyle and heredity.

Two groups of patients took part in the scientific experiment - with stable ischemic heart disease (without heart attack) and unstable coronary artery disease (or heart attack).

Doctors have discovered that molecular variants that function as biomarkers allow us to determine who is likely to face an acute illness in a short period of time.

"This is not the first biomarker of heart attack identified so far, but it is the most important. In fact, it allows to identify in a group of individuals at risk, those who are at high risk and who need therapeutic interventions and immediate evaluations. Therefore, it opens the door to personalized or precision medicine," shared the director of the laboratory and rector of the university, Giuseppe Novelli.

"Having this information could be useful as a prognostic test for acute myocardial infarction in patients presenting to the emergency department," he added.
