A cellar is a special room for every gardener, because it is there that summer residents store the harvest grown by their own hands, and housewives send their pickles there. It is desirable to have a satisfactory level of air humidity in the cellar. If the cellar is very damp, then the vegetables will not be able to be stored for a long time - they will quickly start to rot. If the room is dry, then everything is the opposite, the harvest begins to wither.
How to determine humidity in a cellar without devices
Fixing the situation is quite easy if you know the secrets of how. However, the problem is not to correct the problem, but to determine the same humidity level. Not every gardener has special devices for measuring humidity, but there is a simple life hack. It will help to find out whether your cellar has the conditions for the best and longest storage of the crop. No devices are required.
You can determine the level of humidity in the basement with the help of an ordinary lighted candle and a match. Just look at how the flame burns. If it is flat and does not wobble at all, then the basement is too damp. If the flame begins to jump strongly and literally dance in your hands, then the situation is the opposite - the air in the cellar is too dry.
Now there are two ways to solve the situation:
- If there is not enough moisture in your basement, you need to spread pieces of water-soaked cloth in the room. So you will raise the level of humidity.
- If the situation is the opposite - the humidity is too high in the basement - you need to put wooden boxes with sand or any other sorbent.
