In Afghanistan, a suicide bomber blew up a minister from the Taliban government

Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani, the minister for refugees in Afghanistan's Taliban government, was killed in a suicide bombing in Kabul on Wednesday.

This was reported by CBS News with reference to two local officials, Ukrinform reports.

A senior official in Afghanistan's Interior Ministry said Haqqani was killed in a suicide attack along with at least four of his associates.

It said the attacker, posing as a visitor with a physical disability, then "targeted Haqqani with an explosive device as the minister left his office to go to prayer."

The Taliban's chief spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, confirmed Haqqani's death in the attack and claimed responsibility for the attack on a local cell of the Islamic State (ISIS) group.

The minister was the brother of Jalaluddin Haqqani, the late founder of the notorious Haqqani Network, an armed group that the US accuses of carrying out numerous deadly attacks during the 20-year war in Afghanistan. Jalaluddin Haqqani's son Sirajuddin currently serves as Afghanistan's interior minister.

It is noted that the death of Khalil Haqqani is a significant blow to the Taliban, and especially to the Haqqani Network, which is recognized by the US government as a terrorist organization. Although their views overlap and representatives of both organizations hold key positions in the Afghan government, they are engaged in an internal struggle for power.

The ISIS regional cell remains active in Afghanistan and regularly carries out attacks against both Taliban regime officials and civilians and foreign nationals. Their attacks are mostly seen as an attempt to undermine the Taliban's power.
