This is stated in his statement published on Sunday, reports Ukrinform.
According to Guterres, the future of Syria should be determined by the Syrians themselves. "My special envoy (Geir Pedersen — editor.) will work with them in this direction," he assured.
The UN Secretary General noted that there is still a lot of work ahead to ensure "an orderly political transition to renewed institutions."
He called for calm and the avoidance of violence "at this sensitive time." The inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises and personnel must be respected in all cases in accordance with international law, Guterres added.
"Syria's sovereignty, unity, independence and territorial integrity must be restored... We remain committed to helping Syrians build a country where reconciliation, justice, freedom and prosperity are a shared reality for all," the UN Secretary General emphasized.
