"No one — neither the authorities nor the protesters — has any intention of backing down."
Protests in Georgia continue and become increasingly violent, and the continuation of the government's policy threatens the country with international isolation. Volodymyr Kravchenko, columnist of the international politics department, writes about this in his article for ZN.UA "Will Georgia return to the Russian barracks".
"If Georgian Dream does not change its decision regarding the EU and manages to stay in power during the protests, this will lead to the international semi-isolation of Georgia, minimizing its contacts with the West and strengthening Russia's position. This will be a serious foreign policy success for the Kremlin," the article says.
However, the author reminds, Prime Minister Kobakhidze assesses the US decision to suspend the strategic partnership with Georgia as temporary and hopes that this decision will be changed by Donald Trump.
The observer is convinced that now the development of events follows an escalation scenario, and the protests are becoming more and more fierce.
In this context, he cites the words of Georgian political scientist Gela Vasadze.
"It is necessary to understand well and be prepared for the fact that this government cannot exist without spinning the flywheel of repression. They have already entered a narrow corridor and will not be able to get out of it. The fact that a terrible end awaits them at the end of this corridor is fair, but not comforting. They will cause too much trouble before that," emphasizes Vasadze.
Kravchenko believes that, as of now, no one — neither the authorities nor the protesters — has any intention of backing down.
"And if the government intensifies repression, then Georgians start using Molotov cocktails with a clear awareness that in the event of defeat, with a very high probability, they will have to live in the barracks of "Russian peace" until the end of the Russian Federation in its current form," he added.
