After assuming the presidency, Donald Trump intends to give up his salary. The politician made such a statement in an interview with the NBC News channel.
According to Trump, he intends to become the first American president (except "maybe George Washington") who will not receive a salary.
"I will not take a single cent. This is my contribution to reducing government spending," he emphasized, adding that he would also give up all other material benefits belonging to the US president, including his pension.
It should be noted that during his first presidency, Trump, although he formally received the president's salary, directed all the money to charity and various programs.
Salary of the President of the United States
Currently, the salary of the president of the United States is 400 thousand dollars a year. But in addition, the president receives an additional 50 for "official expenses", 19 for organizing receptions and 100 for "business trips".
The pension of former US presidents today is $219 a year. In addition to a pension, ex-presidents receive other perks, such as funding for offices and staff, government security for life, and free medical care if certain conditions are met.
It should also be added that the first president of the United States, George Washington, whom Trump mentioned, really tried to refuse the presidential salary. He was a rich man and did not want his job as president to look like a self-interested occupation. However, Congress forced him to receive a salary in order not to create a bad precedent: when only a rich person who does not need money can be the de facto president of the country.
