It's no secret that brisk walking is directly linked to a longer life. However, scientists say that the rule only works with those who can cover the maximum distance in six minutes without stopping or resting.
According to a study published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition", for those who take a 20-minute walk every day, the risk of early death is reduced by more than 30%.
"People who walk fast can live 20 years longer. Thanks to such walks, they improve the condition of the cardiovascular system, which is an indicator of the efficiency of the heart and the ability to use oxygen," said Tom Yates from the British University of Leicester.
In a new study published in JAMA, scientists decided to find out how fast walking affects patients suffering from peripheral artery disease. As a result of the work, it was established that a higher walking speed is associated with relief of pain and other symptoms of the condition.
According to experts, the optimal indicator is a person's ability to walk from 400 to 700 meters (4-7 km/h) in six minutes - in this case, one can talk about good physical training. However, doctors note that the score may vary depending on gender, age or health.
