NATO has announced plans to deploy a maritime drone system aimed at protecting key underwater lines of communication in the Baltic and Mediterranean seas. The decision came after a series of cable failures, the latest of which occurred in November. This innovative initiative should be implemented by June 2025, when the next summit of the alliance will take place.

NATO Supreme Commander Admiral Pierre Wandier compared the new system to surveillance cameras that monitor public places. He emphasized that constant monitoring of the water environment will allow prompt response to potential threats. The experience of the US Navy, which since 2021 has been successfully using unmanned platforms as part of operations in the Middle East, will be used to accelerate the implementation of the project.

The USV Fleet will be the first phase of the initiative. In addition to surface ships, NATO plans to use underwater drones for deep-sea monitoring. This will provide comprehensive control over critical infrastructures, in particular underwater cables, through which the bulk of Internet connections and data transmission passes.

Special attention is paid to possible threats from Russia, which, according to NATO, may be developing attack strategies on these important infrastructures. The system will be an important tool to ensure stability and security in the region, as well as to prevent any acts of sabotage that could disrupt global connectivity.
