This is reported by DW with reference to the statement of the National Network for the Protection of Human Rights (RNDDH) of Haiti, reports Ukrinform.
It is said that the reason for the massacre was the suspicions of the leader of the gang, Monel "Mikano" Felix, that his child, who died on Saturday, December 7, was harmed by witchcraft. Felix ordered a mass murder after a voodoo priest he had sought advice from regarding a child's illness accused a group of elderly people of allegedly harming the child with witchcraft.
Members of Wharf Jeremie killed at least 60 people on Friday and 50 on Saturday, using machetes and knives, the RNDDH said in a statement. All the victims were over 60 years old, human rights activists report.
Tight control by the gang, including restrictions on the use of mobile phones, prevented residents from sharing information about the massacre.
According to United Nations estimates, the Wharf Jeremie gang numbered about 300 in October. Cite Soleil is one of the poorest areas in Haiti with one of the highest levels of violence.
