The National Health Service of Great Britain (NHS) has listed measures on how to properly get rid of barley on the eye to avoid complications.
Barley is caused by a bacterial infection, most often Staphylococcus aureus, which is associated with a weakened immune system. The condition is accompanied not only by unpleasant sensations, but also by psychological discomfort. According to NHS advice, in case of illness, you should wet a clean cloth in boiled cold water, hold it in the eye area for 5-10 minutes, repeating this manipulation up to 4 times a day.
To relieve pain, you should take painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. If the above recommendations do not lead to an improvement in the condition, then you should consult a doctor, who will help reduce swelling by manipulating the needle. At the same time, the specialist may prescribe external or oral antibiotics if the infection has spread and affects other areas of the eye.
To avoid worsening symptoms, British experts advise to avoid wearing contact lenses and applying make-up. In no case should you try to pierce the barley in the eye yourself, as this threatens the spread of infection.
In turn, doctors from the Mayo Clinic note that in order to avoid the further development of this disease, it is important to wash your hands with soap and warm water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer several times a day. You should not wipe your eyes even if a hygienic procedure was performed.
