Russia spent a lot of effort on "stabilization" in Syria and fulfilled its mission, Dmytro Peskov believes.

The current situation in Syria is the result of the policies of former President Bashar al-Assad, not Russia. Kremlin spokesman Dmytro Peskov said this, Russian mass media reported on Wednesday, December 11.

According to him, Russia once helped Syria deal with "terrorists" and stabilize the situation in the country.

"Russia helped the Syrian Arab Republic deal with terrorists at one time and contributed to the stabilization of the situation after it began to threaten the entire region. Russia has spent a lot of effort for this. Then Russia fulfilled its mission," Peskov believes.

At the same time, he stated that the further actions of the Assad leadership, aimed at the development of the country, became the cause of the current crisis.

"This development has led to a difficult situation, with which it is now necessary to work, taking into account the current realities," Peskov added.

He assured that now Moscow maintains contacts with the forces that control the situation in Syria. This is necessary to solve security issues of Russian bases and diplomatic missions.
