A Mediterranean diet is associated with a lower prevalence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
AMD is a chronic disease of the central area of the retina of the eye (the macula), which leads to a gradual loss of central vision, which is necessary for the clear perception of objects.
Experts from the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine (USA) determined that the Mediterranean diet is more useful for elderly people aged 85 and older.
The authors concluded that following a diet rich in nutrients, including fruits, vegetables, legumes and fish, as well as reducing the consumption of red or processed meat and salty foods, can prevent the development of AMD with a high probability.
