Iran poses a threat to a number of politicians in the administration of Donald Trump due to the elimination in 2020 of the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The administration of US President Joe Biden noted that the current threat from Iran is related to a wider system of threats against former officials of the Trump administration, which arose after the January 2020 assassination of the head of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Qassem Soleimani, informs UAINFO.org with reference to Bloomberg.
He was killed by a drone strike on the orders of Trump, who was then president of the United States.
“We have been tracking Iranian threats against former Trump administration officials for years, starting with the last administration. These threats stem from Iran's desire to 'retaliate' for the killing of Soleimani," US National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said on Tuesday.
Before Saturday's incident, the White House contacted the Secret Service about the recent Iranian threat, and the agency shared that information with the Trump campaign, according to one of the sources. The Secret Service subsequently increased resources and assets to protect the Republican nominee.
The U.S. maintains security records on several former Trump administration officials, including former Secretary of State Michael Pompeo and former national security adviser John Bolton. In 2022, the Department of Justice indicted a member of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps over an alleged plot to kill Bolton.
That same year, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan warned that Iran was threatening to "carry out terrorist operations inside the United States and elsewhere around the world." He said Iran would face "severe consequences" if it attacked anyone.
