Global logistics giant DHL is serving Diageo North America – the maker of Captain Morgan rum – with the deployment of new Nikola tractor units with hydrogen engines and a dedicated hydrogen fueling station.

DHL has established itself as a leader in zero-emission freight with its BEV terminal truck initiatives, starting in 2015 when the shipping company launched the Orange EV to operate at the Diageo terminal in Plainfield, Illinois.

It is noted that Nikola hydrogen trucks will be used on trunk routes 600-650 km long throughout the Great Lakes region.

“As a global logistics company committed to decarbonizing its business, we have included sustainability as a fourth strategic endpoint called 'Green Logistics of Choice' in our recently announced Strategy 2030. The deployment of these fuel cell cars is one of many initiatives that demonstrate how we keep our word,” explains Jim Monkmeier, president of DHL Supply's transportation division.

In addition to a range of 800 km on a full tank, Nikola trucks offer significant improvements in driver comfort and ADAS efficiency thanks to reduced noise and vibration typical of diesel trucks, according to company representatives.
