A stroke is an acute disruption of the blood supply to the brain. When the blood stops carrying oxygen to the cells, they begin to die. One of the most common types of stroke is ischemic. One of its causes can be a blood clot that has broken off: it blocks the vessel and interferes with blood flow.
According to the NHS, there are some simple but effective ways to reduce your risk of stroke. All of them relate to a healthy lifestyle.
Eating
The risk of developing an ischemic stroke is dramatically increased by very fatty foods: fast food, sausages, butter, cakes, and so on. It is better to replace them with more useful products: chicken and fish, eggs, vegetables and fruits, nuts. It is better to cook at home with olive, sunflower, corn oil.
Physical activity
To reduce the risk of stroke, it is not necessary to do sports. It is enough to move actively for at least 30-60 minutes most days of the week. In combination with diet, this will dramatically increase the chances of health.
Avoiding alcohol and smoking
It is not possible to give up alcohol completely. Doctors say that it is necessary to at least limit its consumption: do not drink more than 350 mg of alcoholic beverages per week. As for smoking, it actually doubles the risk of ischemic stroke, it is better to give it up completely.
Chronic diseases
People suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure need to monitor their condition very carefully. On the recommendation of a doctor, you can take medications that reduce the risk of stroke.
