Millions of people suffer from colon cancer every year. However, there are ways to prevent this – such as through diet, a new study shows. Certain types of fruit reduce the risk.
Research shows that different lifestyle habits greatly affect the risk of colon cancer. In addition to getting enough exercise, diet can also have a significant impact on disease risk.
Research shows that, above all, it is recommended to consume enough fiber. A large proportion of fruits and vegetables and a small proportion of red meat and meat products in the diet also have a positive effect.
Does eating fruit affect the risk of colon cancer?
The effect of the consumption of certain types of fruit on the risk of colon cancer has now been studied in a meta-analysis. 24 observational studies from medical and scientific databases were selected for analysis.
Meta-analysis of 24 studies
To find out whether the consumption of a particular type of fruit affects the risk of colon cancer, the risk of colon cancer in the group of study participants who consumed the least amount of each type of fruit was compared with the group who consumed the most amount.
“A meta-analysis showed that consumption of some of the included fruits was associated with a lower risk of colon cancer. Increased consumption of citrus fruits, apples, watermelons and kiwis was associated with a lower risk of colon cancer compared to consumption of small amounts," says the oncologist.
High consumption
- Citrus: 9% risk reduction.
- Apples: 25% risk reduction.
- Watermelon: 26% risk reduction.
- Kiwi: 13% risk reduction.
But why? On the one hand, reducing the risk of colon cancer can be achieved by improving gut health through vitamin and fiber intake.
"According to the authors, this effect may also be due to the potential chemopreventive effect of various plant ingredients, such as: B. Nobilitene or naringenin, which are found, for example, in the peel of citrus fruits."
Chemoprophylaxis involves taking drugs to prevent certain diseases.

Prevent cancer with nine measures
There are other ways to prevent cancer. Cancer and prevention researchers regularly emphasize this.
Oncologist Vorrobyov summarizes the following:
- Avoid being overweight
- Move every day
- Healthy Eating
- Don't smoke
- Drink as little alcohol as possible
- Avoid carcinogens
- Protect yourself from UV radiation
- Vaccination against cancer (hepatitis B; HPV)
- Use the suggestions for early detection of cancer.
