According to the scientists, the consumption of walnuts can have "wide-ranging effects" on health of a positive nature: they help prevent heart disease and prolong life.
Researchers state that for healthy aging, it is necessary to maintain a normal body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, and triglyceride level. Recent evidence suggests that walnuts can help achieve all of the above.
These data were published by the journal "Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases" (Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases), they indicate "large-scale positive effects" for health associated with the inclusion of walnuts in the diet. Specialists from the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota observed what happens in the body of people who regularly consume such nuts. They concluded that the owners of this habit may have a "unique body phenotype" - they have a reduced risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, obesity and diabetes.
Eating walnuts has been called by scientists a natural way to prolong life. According to their data, regular consumers of these nuts most often demonstrate physical characteristics associated with healthy aging and protection against premature death:
- Lower body mass index
- Lower waist circumference.
- Reduced blood pressure.
- Lowering the level of triglycerides in the blood.
"People who regularly eat walnuts also have a lower tendency to gain weight and significantly lower fasting blood glucose levels, and have a better profile of cardiovascular disease risk factors," the researchers concluded.
They emphasized that nuts are rich in good fats, such as polyunsaturated fats and omega fatty acids, which help lower bad cholesterol and reduce inflammation that affects vascular tissue.
"Five servings of nuts a week can reduce the risk of blood clots and heart disease by 50 percent."
The experts added that walnuts may also be involved in cancer prevention due to their powerful antioxidant activity, but more research is needed to confirm this.
