Volkswagen is recalling more than 100 thousand cars: which models are at risk and what is the reason
Volkswagen has announced a recall of approximately 115 vehicles in the US due to a problem with Takata airbags. Although no safety threats have been identified at this time, the manufacturer has decided to replace the modules due to the potential risk of the cushions exploding after prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity. The recall affects the Passat (000-2006, 2007-2012), Beetle and Beetle Convertible (2014-2017), and the 2019 Passat Wagon.
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that airbags can explode due to the degradation of the fuel cell, resulting in the formation of dangerous debris that can injure the driver and passengers. Despite the fact that no defects were found in Volkswagen's tests, the company, in cooperation with NHTSA, decided to replace the airbags with safer options.
The recall notices will be sent to car owners by the end of 2024, after which they can go to authorized dealers for a free replacement.
