The European Parliament proposes to create its own security organization in addition to the UN

The head of the European Parliament, Roberta Metzola, said that the European Union should create its own security organization that would complement the UN.

In an interview with elMundo, she explained that the EU should always be stronger, more consistent and more efficient.

"I say the same when it comes to creating, for example, a real security and defense union. The union that we have been demanding for a long time, which would complement NATO and not compete with the EU," said Metsola.

According to the official, Europe is on the verge of an extremely unstable situation due to the full-scale war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. Metzola is convinced that the EU should be ready for anything, regardless of who will enter the White House after the US presidential election.

"In January, there will be a new president, and therefore a new administration. There will also be a new Senate and a new Congress, who are our colleagues when it comes to voting on financial aid to Ukraine. I hope that we will be able to continue working together," concluded the Head of the European Parliament.

Reforming the UN - what was reported

Against the background of the war in Ukraine, the UN has shown itself to be an ineffective organization. In 2022, Ukraine initiated the process of excluding Russia from the Security Council of the United Nations and from the UN in general. However, even after more than two years of incredible terror of the Ukrainian population, Moscow reserves its place in the organization.

In the middle of his speech at the UN Security Council in 2023, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi emphasized. that the whole world sees why the UN is an inefficient organization.

"The veto in the hands of the aggressor is what drove the UN into a dead end. No matter who you are, the existing UN system still makes you less than the right of veto, which only a few (UN members) have and which is used by one - Russia - to the detriment of all other UN members," the president said.

In September 2024, Finnish President Alexander Stubb proposed reforming the UN Security Council, abolishing the right of veto by one state and suspending membership for those members of the organization that participate in an "illegal war" such as in Ukraine.

At the end of September, the President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, emphasized that since Russia uses its right of veto in the UN Security Council as a carte blanche for aggression against its neighbors, the organization must be reformed.

Sky News noted that the UN will have a hard time proving its relevance because of the war in Ukraine. Some countries openly support Moscow's violation of the fundamental principles of the UN, others turn a blind eye to it or profit from the war. The situation with Sudan is similar - different countries support one side or another and cannot put an end to the destructive conflict.
