Some Ukrainian politicians believe that the appointment of Marco Rubio and Michael Volz may indicate continued support for Ukraine.
Supporters of Ukraine can look to the future with the hope that Kyiv will have support under Trump. This was announced by Politico.
The hope comes after news that President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Congressman Michael Waltz as his national security adviser and plans to nominate Senator Marco Rubio for secretary of state.
Both politicians support the concept of "America above all else" and remain tough on countries such as China, Iran and Russia in foreign policy matters. Although Rubio and Volz did not support some of the previous aid packages for Ukraine, it was not because they did not want to help, but because of the domestic priorities of the United States. Moreover, Volz even proposed to allow Ukraine to use American long-range weapons to strike Russia, which the Biden administration did not support.
The Trump administration's plans include increasing sanctions against Russia's energy sector, which is one of the main sources of revenue to finance Russia's military. Volz stressed the need to close loopholes that allow Russia to export oil, confirming the tough approach Trump used during his first term.
Some Ukrainian politicians believe that the appointment of Rubio and Volz may indicate continued support for Ukraine, although they understand that achieving a significant amount of aid from the United States may require great efforts.
Trump himself stated that he is capable of ending the war in Ukraine in one day, but he has not revealed how exactly. Such a statement causes concern among European allies, who fear that the US may demand more responsibility from Europe for supporting Ukraine.
At the same time, advisers remain in the Trump administration who are skeptical about supporting Ukraine. Donald Trump Jr. recently spoke sarcastically about Ukraine, hinting at the possibility of reducing aid.
Some Ukrainian and NATO officials fear that a peace deal that Trump might offer would only temporarily halt the war, leaving Russia room for future action.
