TikTok will block children's access to "beauty filters"
The popular TikTok platform will ban teenagers from using filters that alter facial features and tighten age-restriction controls for users.
The TikTok platform has announced new measures aimed at protecting teenagers, The Guardian reports.
The company will ban users under 18 from using "beauty filters" that change facial features in a way that cosmetics can't. These are popular effects like Bold Glamour, which add make-up, enlarge lips, change the shape of the face and lift the eyebrows.
Such steps were taken due to concerns that the use of filters could cause anxiety and negatively affect children's self-esteem.
The innovations will not affect comic filters that add to the face, for example, rabbit ears or dog noses.
In addition, TikTok is strengthening the fight against fake accounts of users under the age of 13. The company plans to launch new automated systems to detect violations of age restrictions by the end of 2024.
Every quarter, TikTok deletes about 20 million accounts of children, but admits that sometimes the system mistakenly blocks adults as well. In such cases, users are advised to contact support for account recovery.
TikTok continues to work on measures aimed at creating a safe space for all users, even if it causes some dissatisfaction among young people.
