Regular brushing of the teeth, use of mouthwashes, visits to the dentist once every six months are important procedures that are often reminded by doctors. However, it turned out that one of these rules can be broken without risking health.

At the international level, there are long-standing discussions about the optimal frequency of dental examinations. Traditionally, dentists recommend that their patients visit the doctor for a check-up twice a year, although the risk of developing dental disease varies from person to person.

More than one and a half thousand people took part in the experiment of scientists from the University of Manchester. Experts studied how different intervals between dental check-ups affected: how many people were diagnosed with caries, gum disease and how this affected their well-being.

They found no difference between the condition of patients who visited the dentist once every two years and those who were examined once every six months. However, the scientists emphasized that this applies to adults undergoing routine examinations. Such statistics do not apply to children and people suffering from diseases of the oral cavity.
