The United States supports the aspirations of the people of Georgia for the EU and the Euro-Atlantic community and is ready to apply additional pressure on the authorities of this country in order for it to meet the demands of its own people, who went to protest actions.
Ukrinform's own correspondent reports that US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said this on Monday in Washington.
"We made it clear that we support the people of Georgia. We have made it clear that we support their aspirations for the EU. We have clearly emphasized that we support their further integration with their Euro-Atlantic partners," the spokesperson of the US State Department emphasized.
He recalled that the United States, in view of the actions of the authorities in Tbilisi, reviewed a significant amount of aid to Georgia, suspending about $95 million of this aid.
"We will continue to consider whether it is appropriate to introduce additional measures, and if so, we will not hesitate to do so," the representative of the US State Department emphasized.
The President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, and international observers expressed concern, noting cases of voter intimidation, vote bribery and other violations. The European Union and the United States called for a thorough investigation of election violations.
On Monday, the opposition of Georgia announced its plan of action at a protest near the parliament building and demanded repeat elections.
