Donald Trump will try to find a quick solution to the end of the war in Ukraine, which would not look like a victory for Russia. However, the previous experience of Trump's diplomacy shows that such attempts may turn out to be failures. This is stated in an editorial of the authoritative British publication The Guardian.
According to British journalists, Trump does not want everyone to say that Vladimir Putin was able to fool him after the conclusion of peace between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. Trump likes to be praised as a strong leader, the British emphasize.
But Trump's first presidential term has already shown what his diplomatic talents are really worth. In particular, The Guardian refers to Trump's infamous talks with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un in 2019, which ended in virtually nothing.
In addition, Trump has the reputation of a person who trusts too much the word "whispered in his ear" at the last moment. At the same time, he does not like to understand the details and does not like when the military influences his decisions.
With this in mind, The Guardian fears that Trump's peace efforts will boil down to the formula voiced by his running mate, Vice President-elect J.D. Vance, on the campaign trail: freeze the war on the current front line and keep Ukraine out of NATO.
"Strikingly similar to Mr. Putin's recipe," British journalists emphasize.
The Guardian also fears that Trump's victory against the backdrop of the collapse of the government coalition in Germany will inspire European right-wing populists, which will also jeopardize European military aid to Ukraine, which is currently comparable in volume to aid from the United States.
"The situation in Ukraine, which is already so dangerous, has significantly worsened this week. Accelerated delivery of the promised aid [from the US], which will allow it (Ukraine) to maximize its position before Mr. Trump takes office, is now its best hope,” The Guardian summarizes.
Trump's victory and Ukraine's prospects
As he wrote, the policy of self-restraint of President Joe Biden in matters of American aid to Ukraine is so fed up with Kyiv that the victory of Donald Trump in the elections turned from the worst nightmare into a ray of hope for the Ukrainian leadership. Now it is Trump who can become the one who can lead the war out of the "bloody impasse".
At the same time, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi assures that he does not know the details of Trump's peace plan, which promised to end the war in 24 hours. The Ukrainian leader warns that quick decisions will mean losses for Ukraine.
