A cruise liner almost crashed near Spain due to a hurricane-like gust of wind

The large cruise ship Explorer of the Seas was en route from Barcelona to Florida when a hurricane force gust of wind forced the ship to turn sharply to the right and then make another sharp turn. Passengers were knocked off their feet, according to the recollections of one of them, "the entire floor was covered with personal belongings and bottles."

According to the captain of the Explorer of the Seas, within five minutes the wind increased from 46 mph to 86 mph (from approximately 74 km/h to 138 km/h — ed.)

Fortunately, the wind died down as suddenly as it appeared, so the situation did not have a tragic development. However, Explorer of the Seas was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Las Palmas for medical treatment and damage assessment.
