Journalist sources shared that the call was initiated by the newly elected head of the White House. The Ukrainian government allegedly knew about the republican's intentions.
The newly elected President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, could already call his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin. This is stated in the material of The Washington Post.
Sources of journalists who are familiar with this matter claim that the telephone conversation took place on Thursday, November 7. Politicians discussed the war in Ukraine.
The interlocutor of the journalists did not reveal many details, but there is information that it was Donald Trump who initiated the conversation and he made the call from his resort in Florida.
The newly elected head of the White House advised the Russian president not to escalate in Ukraine, because the US has a significant military presence in Europe.
Other sources added that the two politicians spoke about a common goal, which is to establish peace on the European continent. Donald Trump, for his part, "expressed interest in further talks to discuss a quick resolution of the war in Ukraine."
The WP said the call came amid general uncertainty about how the Republican is going to "reshape the world's diplomatic chessboard" after winning the presidential election.
At the same time, the government of Ukraine knew that Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin were planning to talk and did not object to it, as sources familiar with the matter said. In Kyiv, "it was understood a long time ago" that the new head of the White House will take this step and want to diplomatically solve Ukraine's problems.
