A powerful earthquake occurred in the east of Cuba on Sunday, November 10. Authorities report damage to buildings and infrastructure, Reuters reports.
According to the US Geological Survey, the magnitude 6,8 earthquake occurred at a depth of 14 km on the southeastern coast of Cuba near the municipality of Bartolome Maso.
About an hour earlier, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5,9 was recorded nearby, reports the American agency.
"There were landslides, damage to houses and power lines. We have started to assess the damage... the first and foremost thing is to save lives," Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel wrote on the X social network.
Local residents told reporters that it was the strongest earthquake in their memory. According to them, houses and buildings shook violently, and crockery, glasses and vases flew off the shelves with a thud.
