The ecologist reminded that there is 200 times less water in the Kurakhiv Reservoir than in the Kakhovsky Reservoir. This means that you should not be afraid of a "tsunami" several meters high, which would go down the Vovchii River.
So far, ecologists have not been able to get to the Kurakhiv dam to assess the consequences of the blasting for the environment. Meanwhile, local authorities claim that the enemy has damaged one sluice on the dam, water is moving downstream from the village of Stari Terny, but there is no threat of flooding so far. The head of the Kurakhiv MBA Roman Padun and ecologist Oleg Listopad spoke about the consequences of the Russian attack on the dam near Kurakhovo on the air of the Suspilne TV channel.
Undermining the Kurakhiv Reservoir — what are the consequences
Roman Padun explained that he currently has no opportunity to examine the dam in order to establish the consequences of the Russian strike. It is known in advance that one lock, through which water flows downstream from the village of Stari Terny, was damaged. So far, no houses have been flooded, but the level of the Vovchai River continues to rise, the official said.
"I contacted my colleagues - there is no critical situation, there are no flooded houses yet," he said in a telephone comment to journalists.
The head of Kurakhivska MBA also added that it was not the first time that the enemy tried to target the dam and damage the logistics of the Defense Forces. According to him, during the last few months, the Russian Armed Forces repeatedly bombarded the area with guided aerial bombs.
Environmental expert Oleg Lystopad explained on the air of the TV channel what the consequences of the destruction of the Kurakhiv dam could be. First of all, he reassured that there will be no "tsunami of water", as happened after the Russian detonation of the dam of the Kakhovsky Reservoir. The reason is due to an order of magnitude smaller volume of the reservoir near Kurakhove (0,08 cubic km) compared to 18 cubic kilometers. km near Novaya Kakhovka. However, the rise of water, which is not typical for the autumn season, will have a detrimental effect on plants and animals. It will also be a pity for people who have built houses close to the river, the interlocutor of the journalists added.
"These are completely incomparable scales. That is, there is no reason for panic. One of the locks was damaged, judging by the speed of the leakage. If the dam had just been hit somewhere, there would not have been such a powerful enough leak. [The consequences] cannot be estimated, because it is necessary for a group of ecologists to carry out the appropriate measurements, and even the fact that we have space images will not give us [such] an opportunity," Listopad concluded.
