- Honda Amaze and Suzuki Dzire were announced simultaneously ahead of their debut.
- Both models will have sleeker styling and more technology than their predecessors.
Small sedans may be a dying breed in North America and Europe, but they're still thriving in India. The two leaders in this segment - Maruti Suzuki Dzire and Honda Amaze - are gearing up for their next generation debuts, both with updated styling and eye-catching refinement to attract modern buyers.
Both Honda and Maruti Suzuki have launched teaser campaigns showing some elements of the new models to build anticipation.
Honda Amazes
Starting with the Honda Amaze, the third generation sedan looks more aggressive compared to the previous model. This is largely due to the hexagonal grille and elongated LED headlights inspired by larger Honda models.
The front bumper has sportier air intakes, and the hood has a sharper finish. Spy shots from India suggest that the small sedan will feature blacked-out taillights to make it look more attractive to younger buyers.
Despite major styling updates, the new Honda Amaze is likely to ride on the same platform. The current generation debuted in 2018 on the basis of the larger Honda City platform. Powertrain options are likely to include a 1,2-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with a capacity of 90 hp. (66 kW), which is combined with either a manual transmission or a CVT.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire
Maruti Suzuki has also entered the teaser fray, but the Dzire has already been fully revealed in India ahead of its official debut on November 5.
Unlike its predecessor, the new generation looks like a separate model, and not like a sedan version of the closely related Suzuki Swift hatchback. The new look includes a more stylish face, a massive grille, sleeker headlights and improved proportions.
Inside, the Dzire inherits most of the Swift's equipment and features, albeit with different trim options and a larger boot. The small sedan will be based on the Heartect platform, sharing the powertrain line-up with the Swift. The latter includes a 1,2-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine with a capacity of 83 hp. (61 kW) and an alternative powered by compressed natural gas. Power will be sent to the front axle via a five-speed manual or CVT.
Apart from Honda Amaze and Suzuki Dzire, the compact sedan segment in India also includes Hyundai Aura and Tata Tigor, both based on city hatchbacks.
