In a few days, the presidential elections will be held in the USA, and the question of which candidate will be more beneficial for Ukraine is particularly acute. Many Ukrainians rely on the Democrat Kamala Harris as a reliable ally, but the real prospects of such support remain in question, lawyer and analyst Andriy Vigirinskyi explained in a commentary on Channel 24.
Why the policies of the Democrats are questionable
According to Vihyrinsky, the US democratic policy towards Ukraine looks quite uncertain. In the project "USA-UA: Secret files of the White House", former Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba mentioned the careful assessments of the then Vice President Joe Biden regarding the prospects for the start and end of the war. At the same time, according to Vihyrinskyi, Harris does not make any specific statements regarding support for Ukraine, which creates the impression of a passive position.
At a security conference in Munich held shortly before the full-scale invasion, Harris advised President Zelensky to prepare for a possible guerrilla war. Such a recommendation looks like a cautious hint of help, but without a direct promise of active support.
Trump and his risks for Ukraine
The former head of Ukrainian foreign intelligence Valery Kondratyuk believes that Donald Trump, as the leader of the Republicans, can create great risks for Ukraine. In his opinion, Trump, who is known for his entrepreneurial orientation, will put his own interests first, which can complicate US relations with Ukraine.
Harris, as a representative of the Democrats, promises to continue Biden's course in support of Ukraine. However, as Vigirinsky notes, this "package" of aid remains limited and does not allow Ukraine to significantly change the situation on the battlefield. According to him, democratic aid is a kind of "dropper", which, although it helps to survive, does not form a confident vision of victory.
Uncertainty of the Democrats' policy towards Ukraine
Andriy Vigirinsky notes that the politics of the Democrats at the moment looks ambiguous: their support is aimed at exhausting Russia, but the strategic plan for ending the war is not visible. According to the analyst, the democrats are not using all opportunities to change the situation at the front, which leaves Ukraine in a state of constant uncertainty.
