Are you familiar with the situation when you had ten pairs of socks before washing, and nine and a half after? If so, you've probably wondered where they go.
The mystery of where socks go when washed in a washing machine appeared a long time ago. Some Ukrainians even jokingly tell stories about how a drum eats one sock out of a pair.
The British also thought about it and even held research commissioned by one of the manufacturers of washing machines. They surveyed 2000 people and found out that on average, every resident of Great Britain loses 1,3 socks a month, which is as many as 15 socks a year
And if you count the approximate number of socks lost in the washing machine throughout your life, you will get 1264 units. The researchers derived a formula, which, of course, should not be taken seriously, because it includes the composition and amount of laundry, the number of people living in the house, the washing mode, etc. However, one of the conclusions turned out to be quite interesting.
Experts conducted another study that helped to find out the reason why socks get lost in the washing machine. It turned out that this is not always the fault of the washing machine, sometimes this item of clothing falls behind the battery during drying or remains under the sofa. When socks get lost in the washing machine, this happens mostly due to excessive load.
When there is a lack of free space, the sock can catch on the edge located between the cuff and the drum. During the reverse movement and wringing, it is pulled under the drum. There it can get stuck, for example, on the heating element, and later it simply breaks into small pieces. That is why a sock lost in a washing machine can almost never be found.
