A new study by British scientists has shown that the risk of acanthamoeba keratitis increases by 3,8 times in users of reusable lenses. More than 200 patients from ophthalmology hospitals participated in the survey, including 83 victims of acanthamoeba keratitis and 122 people who had other eye problems. Multiple soft contact lens wearers were found to have an almost fourfold higher risk of developing AK compared to disposable or daily lens wearers.
Taking a shower without removing the lenses increased the possibility of infection by 3,3 times, and with the lenses not removed increased this possibility by 3,9 times. According to researchers, up to 62% of cases of this infection near England and other countries simply would not have happened if everyone wore disposable lenses.
