Many Ukrainian drivers raise the wiper blades in winter to prevent them from freezing to the glass. However, an experienced auto mechanic warns that this can lead to expensive repairs, so you shouldn't do it, writes SUV News.
The specialist explained that the wiper mechanism is not designed to lift the brushes. If they remain in the raised position for a long time, the springs stretch and the brushes do not press against the glass as much as they should. Because of this, they clean the surface poorly, leaving dirt and stains. As a result, you will have to buy new brushes sooner than usual.
The mechanic advises not to lift the brushes, but to use the heated windshield, which is in most modern cars. If there is no heating, you can direct the heater to the windshield to prevent the wipers from freezing. It is safer and more efficient.
