This year, Mercedes-Benz trucks of the LN2 family turned 40 years old. They were produced from 1984 to 1998 and became #1 in the light segment. The cars replaced the LP series machines and received a wider weight range of versions - with a gross weight from 6,5 to 13 tons (models 709 - 1320), and later - up to 15 tons (1524). Thus, they faced T2 light vans and heavy NG/SK trucks.
Mercedes-Benz LN2 is a completely new development with an advanced folding cabin. Its design became a harbinger of the appearance of heavy-duty SK models that appeared in 1988.
With the same body length as the predecessor LP, the novelty had a shorter wheelbase, which made it more maneuverable. In addition to versions for transportation around the city, including for construction, cars with sleeping cabins were also offered - for driving over long distances, including tractor-trailers.
The standard equipment of the cars includes power steering. For the first time among trucks with a gross weight of 6,5 tons and above, a pneumatic braking system was used, which allowed the installation of an ABS system.
The model offered a wide range of four- and six-cylinder diesel engines OM364 and OM366 - with power from 90 to 204 hp. For the first time, low-profile tires were used for the light class of trucks, which improved active safety - increased controllability and directional stability. A four-wheel drive version was also offered.
After all, the Mercedes-Benz LN2 was able to surpass its predecessor in terms of the high profitability for which it was so famous. The new machines carried more cargo at 10% lower costs, both for fuel and maintenance. The most popular was the 814 model, with a total weight of 7,5 tons, equipped with a 6-cylinder OM366 engine, with a working volume of 5958 cm136. and with a capacity of XNUMX hp.
