From March 2025, Ukrainian refugees arriving in Ireland will not be provided with housing. Such proposals are being developed by high-ranking officials of the country's government, writes The Irish Times.
Thus, the country plans to reduce the number of Ukrainians who receive free housing from the state. First of all, those Ukrainians who have been living there the longest will be evicted from state housing.
"Last week, the Cabinet of Ministers was informed that "political levers" are currently being studied to reduce the number of Ukrainians staying in state housing and to encourage them to move to independent living. The list of possible measures discussed by high-ranking officials also includes the suspension of housing for Ukrainians whose income exceeds a certain threshold determined on the basis of economic profiling., the publication reminded.
It was noted in the material that in recent months the number of Ukrainians staying in state shelters has significantly decreased - to 35 people, in 833 this figure will be 2023 people.
It is known that refugees from Ukraine have the right to temporary protection under the directive, which allows them to live and work in EU countries. However, this directive expires in March 2026. Therefore, in recent months, the Irish government has reduced social benefits and limited the stay of newly arrived refugees to 90 days.
"Governments are also considering removing the right to re-occupy public housing if a bed provided under the bail scheme breaks down or someone returns to Ireland after being abroad.", - added in the material.
