The Magna company has been creating night vision cameras for cars for over 20 years. The manufacturer of automotive components revealed several secrets of their development and operation.

The Austrian developer created its first thermal imaging system back in 2003. The system was named Night Vision and was introduced on the BMW 7-Series in 2005, and since then has been used by 13 car manufacturers in 40 car models. Modern systems have a longer range, enhanced detection capabilities and a clear image even in total darkness.

According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 76% of pedestrians are killed in the dark, while in Britain, statistics from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents show that 40% of accidents happen in the dark.

Not all of them are caused by impaired vision of drivers, but reduced vision in the dark is believed to be the most obvious danger. As we age, our night vision deteriorates. According to doctors, between the ages of 15 and 65, the time required to restore vision after glare increases from one to 19 seconds.

Magna's state-of-the-art thermal imaging camera is the size of a golf ball, whereas in 2000 it was the size of a dinner plate. Usually, such cameras are installed in the front part of the car. It is connected to the control unit, which sends a notification to the driver through the instrument panel in case of danger.

Magna aims to eventually shrink the camera to the size of a sugar cube and is constantly working on software to improve detection algorithms and improve image clarity.

The next-generation technology will debut later this year, and while the current version can see four times farther than a headlight, the new setup will allow the driver to see three football fields at night. This should give the driver up to 30 seconds to stop the car if necessary.
