The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, who stands out for his pro-Russian position, called the journalists of the major mass media "bloodthirsty bastards".

According to Politico, he has threatened them with new restrictions, including the creation of a national media watchdog that critics say is tantamount to state censorship.

Fico became angry at a press conference after a journalist asked him about tensions in his three-party ruling coalition. Slovak President Peter Pellegrini, who represents the coalition partner Hlas, criticized the government over the weekend.

"Since the first day of parliamentary results on September 30, 2023, you have not left us alone for a single minute. You attacked us like bloodthirsty bastards," said Fizo.

He singled out the major independent Slovakian dailies Denník N and Sme, as well as the Aktuality portal, which were critical of his government and with which he cut off all communication. Fizo continued:

"Do you read your articles after you write them? I don't think you are reading... This is pure hatred. You are possessed by the devil."

He also blamed journalists for the May attack, in which a gunman shot him four times in the stomach.

"You only want harm, harm, harm and harm, and that's why the atmosphere in society is the way it is," Fizo said.

He went on to list various measures his government could take against the media, which, he said, "do whatever they want with absolutely no accountability."

"The time has come when we have to react to such things," Fico said, adding that the "media chaos" that engulfed Slovakia "doesn't exist in any other EU country."

The Prime Minister said that he supports the creation of a national media body and sanctions for journalists who do not correct errors in their materials. He believes that all journalists should undergo retraining courses, like "lawyers and notaries".

Fico's scandalous statements

Recently, Robert Fizo harshly criticized the calls of MEPs to allow Ukraine to carry out long-range strikes on the territory of the Russian Federation.

During a speech on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Carpathian-Dukla operation, Fico said that some members of the European Parliament "with the ease of a spring breeze" talk about the transfer of missiles to Ukraine, thus "encouraging the war to continue." In addition, he suggested "hitting a fountain with a rocket" so that politicians "understand what it is actually about."
