As a result of the drought in Europe, the water level in the Danube dropped significantly, which exposed the remains of German ships sunk during the Second World War. It is reported Ukrainian merchant
It is reported that the ships were found near the Serbian city of Prahovo.
The ships belonged to the Black Sea Fleet of Nazi Germany. They were lost in the last months of the war, when the Germans retreated under the pressure of the Soviet troops. Often the Germans drowned them themselves so that they did not reach the enemy. Currently, these wrecks can make river traffic difficult during low water levels in the Danube.
Ships are scattered along the riverbed. Some of them still have turrets, conning bridges, broken masts and twisted hulls. Others lie mainly under sandy shores.
Also, four vessels dating back to 1950 were discovered in Hungary's Danube-Drava National Park near Mohács, where the Danube's water level was only 1,5 meters on Tuesday, the result of intense heat and prolonged drought in July and August.
