Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences analyzed approximately 3000 glass beads found in samples of lunar soil delivered by the Chang'e-5 mission. Most of them were formed by impacts, but three balls caused an unexpected discovery.

This is reported by News Planet with reference to Science Alert.

Led by Professors Li Qiuli and He Yuyang, the team of scientists examined approximately 3000 glass beads in lunar soil samples.

As a result of the analysis, it was established that most of them arose as a result of the collision of meteorites with the surface of the Moon. However, three of them turned out to be special - they were recognized as volcanic glass.

The study of sulfur isotopes helped to reveal this. In terms of composition, the three balls of volcanic origin are significantly different from impact glass. Uranium-lead dating showed that they were formed about 123±15 million years ago.

Additional radioisotope analysis clarified the age of the finds, which was 120 million years, which was a surprise for scientists. Previously, it was believed that volcanic activity on the Moon ended at the initial stages of its existence.

The Moon was originally thought to have cooled and settled down about 4 billion years ago, later studies have adjusted this date to 2 billion years ago. But the glass found, brought back by the Chinese mission, suggests that volcanic activity may have continued as long as 120 million years ago.

This discovery will force scientists to revise geophysical models of the Moon's thermal history. The discovery of such young traces of volcanism suggests that small celestial bodies like the Moon can retain internal heat for much longer than previously thought.
